by Simon Paton
Nov 8, 2011 at 13:35

Amateur racers get the chance to race through the city of Swansea in Wales on Sunday the 4th of December 2011 at the Red Bull Downforce in front of thousands of spectators. Christmas shopping will be in full swing as shoppers stop by to catch the chosen few descending through the streets of Swansea.

The course will see riders reaching speeds of up to 40mph taking on narrow flights of steps, high speed turns and super steep cobbled roads.

32 riders will battle it out over 2 runs to set their fastest time. The course will start at Nicander Parade and will finish on The Kingsway in Swansea’s City Centre, will fully test the riders to their limits through the highly technical urban course. Red Bull athlete Gee Atherton will be there to meet riders and fans and even test out the course himself.

For a chance to compete at the Red Bull Downforce you are invited to apply for a place here: Red Bull Downforce.

Applications are now open and will close on the 28th of November sharp.

Red Bull

Spectators are welcome to watch the action for free from 12pm, with the final starting at 3pm and prize giving at 3:30pm. The best viewing spots will be from the start line on Nicander Parade and the finish line on The Kingsway, at the end of Princess Way.

Riding through Swansea on a £4000 bike sounds like a bad idea to me. Can just picture it now Gracia flying downhill with a gang of chavs chasing him.

Yo WONKLE! They wont be trying out moos and clyne because they are in jeapordy of being bulldozed by our local council, because some knob head has put a complaint in of kids using them, and apparently they havent got planning permission to build them.....So they are out of bounds until further notice......Thats sucks!!!!

no that's retarded dress for the crash!
  • + 0
flag nojzilla (Nov 9, 2011 at 12:35)
its not retarded realy is it, thats a bit of an insult!
its a slogan from an old Lord clothing T'shirt.
Im hardly gonna hit up a pump track in anything more than a skate lid an gloves.full face an knee pads for 4X or a bmx track, im saving for a neck brace for DH
i feel stiff an less comfertable with more padding on, the less smooth comfertable i feel the more likely i am to crash
hence "dress for the ride"
its all down to personal prefference

not wearing helmets is for twats !
  • - 2
flag bikeaddict123 (Nov 9, 2011 at 14:04)
yes it was an insult! if you save more protection for more gnarly riding then you are dressing for the crash!!! technically so long as you don't crash in dh you could do it naked and be no worse off. you only wear the protection for when you crash.

As kids we rode stairs like that in the Oakland hills - Schwinn stingrays, no suspension, no helmets, definitely no pads. faster you go , easier it is. Jumped sets too. But then we were young, flexible, and of course not so wise - sure was fun - hah!

flag nojzilla (Nov 10, 2011 at 8:31)
 yea rubber bones Smile
yea i think back to some of the bmx street stuff we did as kids into my early 20's. no pads no helmets, crazy stuff coulda got real messed up if it went wrong, guess we were just lucky but, confidence in your own abilitys counts for a hell of a lot. just gotta watch a few skate an bmx films to see that
i wear more protection nowerdays cos those rubber bones have hardened up now im in my 30's

@bike addict i meant an insult to retarded poeple, please pack in "thats retarded or thats gay" shit, it just shows your ignorance
  • + 0
flag bikeaddict123 (Nov 10, 2011 at 9:41)
my ignorance? you're the one on the internet encouraging kids not to wear helmets because "confidence in your own abilitys counts for more"...
  • + 1
flag nojzilla (Nov 10, 2011 at 12:41)
when did i ever say "hey kid dont where a helmet" please copy paste it an point it out to me..................
im speaking about MY OWN experience if that influences any one then thats thier problem SERIOUSLY
go watch a Sean Burns video, or daniel dares mountain dew street winning run....
theres a HELL of a lot of riders on the internet doing INSANE stuff an not wearing helmets an ya know what
THATS THIER CHOICE nothing to do with me or my comments
stephen murry had a helmet on when he crashed as did scott shepard who both had horrific unfortunate accidents with life changing outcomes Frown
mikey aitken
mike tag
jimmy levan
the list goes on and on, some with helmets some without an in my honest opinion YES NOT WEARING A HELMET IS WRONG but as ive already said its personal choice,

we all take our lives in our own hands when we do what we do
and
"im not here to be a role model"
dont get bent on sarcasm or silly comments (when i put a Wink after a comment it usualy means im being tounge in cheek)

flag bikeaddict123 (Nov 11, 2011 at 10:14)
 "no pads no helmets"

yes horrific, i guess you obviously have no idea how much worse off they would have been without a helmet.

i don't see what point you're making by showing me a video of sean burns... yes i realise he's not scared thank you... he rides without pads and a helmet and then gets hurt, what do you expect. shitty role model etc etc.

flag nojzilla (Nov 11, 2011 at 10:48)
 "no pads no helmets"
ah i did wonder, well that was in reference to me myself and i (an my mates) not wearing a helmet, because we were just kids dicking about on bikes, having fun hell we didnt even know helmets existed. back there was no inernet, no videos not even magazines!! we did all types of stupid stuff back then like climb trees, build camps, go miles out into the woods on our own without parental guidence OH HEAVEN FORBID
we were a LOT more free back then we didnt think every one was a peado we were not wraped in cotton wool, we were not scared of grazing our knees or getting dirty an if we came home with broken limbs.. our parents didnt SUE anybody, THEY GAVE US A CLIP ROUND THE EAR!!
  • + 1
flag nojzilla (Nov 11, 2011 at 10:55)
oh an i do know how messed up things can get when riders are wearing a helmet or not, wich was my point
if your gonna get FKed up your gonna get FKed up, thats why i listed riders who were wearing and not wearing helmets when they crashed

like i said its personal choice,
an NO ONE sets out to be a role model, kids that look up to them do that themselves

tell ya what, when i crash an FK my self up i wont blame anybody but my self BUT, i'l be sure to drop you a message so then you'l be totaly within your rights to point the finger an call me a RETARD Smile

I know this area pretty well and ive found out the witch the track it going to run. Theres going to be a good bit of peddling. Some fast lines and narrows. But i think the top end of the track will be the best spot. Hopefully if it goes good they will do it again and mix it up because there are some awesome hills and sharpe bends and steps in this area. Its a shame mumbles hill aint longer because that would be bags of fun blasting down those steps between the pub and old houses. Any way good luck to the guys riding and if its wet. take a spare pair of under pants for after wards because you wont be just making skid marks with your tyres. Peace

Doubt they will go down Constitution Hill (although it is possible and would be fun to watch) if they are starting on Nicander Parade and ending up on the Kingsway. Probably heads down Mount Pleasant/Picton Terrace etc.... know some people at Swansea Council Events and they hadnt even heard of this yet!!
  • + 1
flag scarletmeista (Nov 11, 2011 at 7:13)
Im not to sure either if they would go down constitution hill either as it doesnt lead you onto the kingsway. Mount pleasant hill, picton terrace is a more likely route like you said. Ive been up and had a look, theres a stepped section off nicander, not much, plus, at the bottom of mount pleasant, they would have to build something over the road by the police station, because there is no way they would close a main road for 3 hours. Tricky this one. I have spoken to people in planning, it was meant to take place in october, but there was 70/30% chance it would take place, so they pushed it back. However, i have seen no advertisement for this event in swansea at all. Surely they would push this a bit more to gain support and spectators. This could be a good thing, i cant think of many coastal cities with such steep surrounding areas, would be great if they could make it an annual thing. Ill post more if any advertisement comes up.

Thats because Redbull sponsored that street race,as they will this one. There are no pics yet of this street race (swansea), because it hasnt taken place. They are just using them for promoting the event to show what it could look like.
